lyrics

The sun and moon and stars used to dictate what we could see, but most of the time it was pretty dark.
While no one is exactly sure how fire came to be, eventually we learned to make it start.

Now we take it for granted, but imagine our first reaction!

Just think!
With fire we don't rely on those stupid dots up in the sky!
We make it light whenever we say!
I mean, they're pretty, and I guess they were good, but this is better.

Since then we've invented ways much more sophisticated (filaments and gas in vacuum tubes) to keep the whole wide world constantly illuminated, but some people complain about the view.

They call progress pollution!
Like going back is a solution!

You may want the skies of long ago, me: I prefer the new neon glow.
You can't take no pride in a starry night.
I say sky-scraping office lights are as good, if not better.
