I grew up within walking distance of the Astroworld/Astrodome complex in Houston, TX. I wasn't really a sports fan when I was a kid, but I went to a few Astros games. Somewhere I have a ball signed by the mascot Orbit. I lived in Houston when the Oilers abandoned the city for Tennessee. Even not being a sports fan, it really really really pissed little me off that such a thing was even possible. What do you mean they are the Tennessee Oilers now? That's like suddenly declaring Iowa is the home of the blues! Like calling Tampa Florida the Big Apple! It kind of freaked me out that some rich asshole could just fuck with an entire city's emotions like that. Many years later the Houston Texans became a thing, and they built their giant mega-stadium right next to the Astrodome. It literally now sits unused in the shadow of its replacement.

Since then I've moved to Chicago and have become a bit of a sports fan. Can you imagine if the Bears moved to St Louis? Can you comprehend if the Cubs moved out of Wrigley and just left it there to collect swampy water and hurricane refugees, then built a brand new Mountain Dew Field downtown that had a fake train in the bleachers that ran when someone hit a home run over the fucking light pole in the middle of the hill in center field?

There was a day when they would say you were a wonder of the world.
There was a time they'd wait in a line to make your turnstiles whirl, but it sure has been quite a while.

Astrodome, remember when they called you home?
How sad it seems that all your teams left you for Tennessee and buildings named for companies.

They said it couldn't happen in New York City.
They said it couldn't happen to Old Comiskey.
But go ask them now if there is any doubt and I think we know what they'll say.

There will come a day when they blow you away to make room for a parking lot.
There will come a time it will be hard to find the place where they left you to rot.
They might let a plaque mark the spot.

Astrodome, remember when they called you home?
How sad it seems that all your teams left you for Tennessee and buildings named for companies.
